Rowland Heights is mostly known for its plethora of Asian restaurants, so I was curious about this small, local Mexican restaurant. I was greeted by a friendly staff member, and he gave me several recommendations when I asked for some. I went with his first suggestion, the Birria de Res. The staff member did inform me the restaurant charges a small fee for paying with card before I paid, which I was fine with. I got my plate in less than 5 minutes, and it looked delicious. The Birria beef was super tender, rich, and savory. With the red sauce, there's a nice and deep spice with a mild heat that adds to the meal's heartiness. The plate also includes corn 3 tortillas, onions, and cilantro to make tacos. The rice and beans are standard fare but still provides a nice palette cleanser for the Birria. I look forward to my next visit.
Started coming here since 2019 and glad they are still here! **pictured: asada and chicken** Chicken taco (5/5): their chicken is the best meat they have imo, super juicy Cabeza taco (4/5): good but oily as it's supposed to be Carnitas taco (4/5): good but a bit dry Asada (4/5): not the best asada I've had but still tasty They used to have really good lengua so it's sad they don't have it anymore. Their green salsa is good, super limey which I love. Price of the taco is pretty reasonable in this economy and it's worth it considering how much meat they put in each taco.
5 stars for the food. This small restaurant is located in the Landmark Plaza, next to the gas station. There are only a handful of tables inside, and they get busy during lunch at 12 pm. Order and pay at the front. I use cash because I didn't hear what one employee said about credit card, and I didn't want to ask again. The employees were super friendly though. Another yelper mentioned there being a transaction fee if using credit card. The salsas here are lit. The green salsa is mild, slightly tangy, garlicky, and smoky. The red salsa is spicier, has more flavor of the chili pepper, and a hint of sweetness to round it out. - Tacos ($2.49 each). I enjoyed the carne asada, carnitas, and suadero. These street tacos were packed edge to edge with meat! The carne asada was my favorite for its flavor and texture. I thought the carnitas was flavorful, but the texture leaned too crunchy for me. The chopped suadero was just okay. It had a mix of hard meat and soft and brisket-like meat. The tortilla was chewy, crispy, and had good corn flavor. It was a little oily, since they lightly fried the two layers to get them to stick together. - Tlayuda Especial ($16.99). My friend ordered this. I had one bite and then basically took over lol. The plate-sized handmade tortilla was thick, pillowy, and chewy. Its bottom was crispy and charred. The black bean spread was flavorful and creamy. Oaxaca cheese, cabbage, tomato, avocado, steak, pork, and chorizo were layered appetizingly on top. The thin steak was smoky and juicy. I don't recall the taste of the pork, but the chorizo could have been jucier. Nevertheless, the sausage had a pleasant mild taste with spices. - Carne Asada Torta ($9.49 + $0.99 avocado added). I got this massive sandwich to-go for my bf and snuck a bite. It was so tasty! The meat was juicy, and the fire-roasted jalapeno gave it more dimension. There were also pinto beans (I forget in what form), lettuce, tomato, onion, and cheese. - Tamales Oaxaquenos ($6.99). I ordered the chicken version, which was mixed with mole inside. The size of one tamal was massive, over twice the size of a regular tamale. However, the taste was not favorite. All the components created a perfumey flavor profile that was too much for me. The chicken was dry, but had a hint of a smokey barbecued flavor. And the earthy flavor of the mole was amplified by the banana leaf. Finally, the thin layer of masa was a little hard and dry. I really want to try the pozole here, since I noticed many people ordering it.
This Oaxacan spot is a rare find. It's very close to being authentic and it is fast! This restaurant is small and nothing fancy, you order at the counter and place an order. I really enjoyed the service here, the gal working there was our cashier and our server. She was real talkative and had a nice chat. We ordered chicken tacos, chicken taquitos, and a chicken burrito. Price was slightly steeper than usual but the quality is solid! I love small local spots like these! A party across from us ordered the signature Tlayuda and it looked delicious. I almost wanted to asked them for a quick bite lol. Will need to order that next time!
My friend was feeling like tacos, so we decided to give this place a try. I went with pretty classic carne asada and al pastor and was not disappointed. Very fresh taste and prompt service. My kid had a plain cheese quesadilla, and that was just as it should be. We also had guac and chips and were thankful that they gave us a refill on chips for free (so we ordered more guac - good strategy, haha). Another friend had the other item I pictured and failed to get the name of, but they ate it all up. Would definitely return. Also grateful for a decent amount of outdoor seating.
Been wanting to come to this place for a long time. I finally got the opportunity and do not regret it. I went with chilaquiles, chicken enchiladas and chile relleno. I don't where to start. The sauces were home made and not the same. The sauce on the enchilada reminded me of something made by a Hispanic grandmother. It was not too thick, almost thin, just enough spice to not call it spicy, but extremely tasty. The chicken inside the enchilada was shredded well. The tortilla used to wrap the chicken was soft and cut easily with a fork. The rice was fluffy and the beans were tasty. Once again, you could taste the home made goodness. The relleno was large, hand battered and cheesy. It was accompanied by a heavier sauce which was also very tasty with a bit of spice. The cheese was gooey and also had just the right amount to not overwhelm the relleno. My chilaquiles were amazing. The chips were not soggy and were actually crisp. The amount of asada provided was plentiful and tasty. And once again, just the right amount of cheese to enjoy the meal. I look forward to returning as this place was really good. There's plenty of parking and plenty of outdoor seating. The service is friendly and the prices are fair. I look forward to going back.
The wait time is fast, food is nice. A very chill nice environment if you sit outside.
Been my childhood restaurant and the best Mexican restaurant I ever been too especially the prices too.
I was so tempted to get something off of the regular menu that is what they are known for like their signature tamale but I needed breakfast so I ordered red chilaquiles with eggs. It was ok. The eggs were perfect. The tortilla chips were not made in house as far as I can tell and I thought they would be because they make their own tortillas. The sauce had no spice (he did say red was mild and green was spicy) and tomato soup forward which I am not used to for a red sauce used in chilaquiles. The beans and rice were plain. I would return but not for breakfast. The other customers were enjoying some very good looking dishes!
This is my local go to place for Mexican food (ok, I know this is an Oaxacan place). The tacos and burritos are solid as they offer 'the usual protein (i.e. carne asada, carnitas, pollo, al pastor, chorizo) suspects.' I did try the tlayuda especial once. I wanted to like it a lot but it was just okay. Made the mistake of ordering it to go as they just have small paper plate for it so I suggest eating this at the restaurant so it's properly served/supported. They also make soups every day from menudo to pozole to caldo de res or pollo so it's not just on the weekends like some places!
